Gabbard's husband tied to anti-gay groups

Advertiser Staff

State Board of Education member Carol Gabbard has amended her financial disclosure report after a complaint that she left information out to hide her husband's affiliations.

Gabbard's initial filing with the state Ethics Commission did not include her former position as secretary of the Science of Identity Foundation, which she has described as a "nonprofit, nonsectarian religious organization that promotes love for God and brotherhood amongst all humankind."

Her filing also did not include the position of her husband, Mike Gabbard, as president of the Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Values, which campaigned against same-sex marriages.

Mitchell Kahle, a member of the pro-gay rights Civil Unions-Civil Rights Movement and a Carol Gabbard opponent, had filed a complaint with the Ethics Commission about the omissions. Gabbard dismissed the claim that she deliberately tried to conceal her husband's affiliations.

She filed an amended report March 27 that included her former position and her husband's position with Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Values, as well as his position as president of Stop Promoting Homosexuality International and as former president of the now-defunct Stop Promoting Homosexuality America.
