'Olelo broadcasts legislature sessions

By Vicki Viotti
Advertiser Staff Writer

A Senate education/housing/human/ services committee hearing streamed on Olelo.org last week.
Participatory democracy is as close as your local state capitol, which for most of us is not close enough. Even if we want to watch lawmaking in action, most of us are chained to our desks when these meetings convene.

'Olelo, the cable TV community-access agency serving O'ahu, has been webcasting some public meetings (www.olelo.org) in its 'OleloNet Live program for several months, and this session has added the state Legislature to its program roster.

The video is shot by Glenn Booth of Omnipath Media Inc., hired by the Legislature under its "Capitol TV" public access program.

Most PC users won't have any trouble accessing the video (click the link at the bottom of olelo.org/olelonet_error.html). It runs on Windows Media Player, which is installed on most newer computers. However, Mac users aren't so lucky. The version of that software for the Mac is buggy, even the supposedly improved Version 7 that's available now.

And because the Senate and House often approve the hearings for videotaping with little notice, the 'Olelo site can't post a program guide to alert viewers to what they're watching.

Most of the videos are labeled, though, and viewers can call '–lelo programming at 834-0007, ext. 134. Well, it's a start.
