Bus fare hike approved

By Robbie Dingeman
Advertiser City Hall Writer

The Honolulu City Council today voted 8-1 to raise bus fares for all riders as of July 1.

If the increase is approved, as expected, adult fares will rise from $1 to $1.50 and student fares from 50 cents to 75 cents. The fare for senior citizens and people with disabilities would rise to 75 cents.

The last time bus fares was increased was 1995.

Council members have said they favor shifting more of the burden of running the bus system onto the riders who use it, rather than the taxpayers who subsidize most of the operating costs.

Monthly bus passes would rise from $25 to $27; student bus passes from $12.50 to $13.50. The two-year pass for senior citizens and the disabled would go from $20 to $25.
