St. Joseph's Onaga pitches 3rd straight BIIF shutout

Advertiser Staff

James Onaga pitched his third straight shutout as St. Joseph defeated Hilo, 3-0, yesterday in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation baseball game at Wong Stadium.

St. Joseph improved to 5-1, second to Waiakea (4-0). Hilo fell a rung to fourth place at 3-2.

Onaga (3-0) allowed two hits and one walk, and struck out eight to run his scoreless innings streak to 19.

Previously, Onaga shut out Kealakehe, 4-0, and Konawaena, 10-0, in a five-inning TKO contest.

Yesterday, the Cardinals scored all their runs in the sixth on three hits, an error and a two-run wild pitch.

Che Doran led off with a bunt single and Aaron Carvalho followed with a single to right. Mike Seto Jr. reached on an error to load the bases.

Hilo pitcher Davin Feary was replaced by Charles Haasenritter, who threw a wild pitch that allowed runners to score from third and second.

After hitting Ronnie Carvalho, Haasenritter tossed one pitch to Ben Bautista and was replaced by Brett Kimura.

Bautista lined a single to left, scoring Seto for a 3-0 lead.

In the seventh, the Vikings staged a two-out rally. Jeremy Kaaukai reached on an error and Kimura was hit by a pitch. Onaga struck out Haasenritter on a full count to end the game.

It was St. Joseph's second straight victory over Hilo after not beating the Vikings for 19 years.
