Police corral one fugitive during search for another

Advertiser Staff

While looking for one fugitive, police caught another.

Arnold "Bully" Willets, who fled from the Laumaka Work Furlough center March 21, is still at large.

But on March 28, police arrested a man they thought was Willets near the intersection of 'Iolani Avenue and Miller Street in Punchbowl.

The man was arrested at 12:02 a.m. while driving a car reported stolen several days earlier, police said.

The suspect was uncooperative and apparently did not have any identification, but officers, who were familiar with Willets, felt certain the escapee had been caught, according to police.

The man was booked and turned over the next morning to state public safety officials. It turned out the suspect in custody was actually Alan McCabe, 39, who bore a striking resemblence to Willets, police said.

But McCabe was also found to be a fugitive. His parole had been revoked and a warrant issued for his arrest. In addition, he may now be charged with auto theft. McCabe is at Halawa prison.

Willets has reportedly been sighted in Wahiawa. Anyone with information on Willets' whereabouts is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
