How to become more fish-savvy

KIHEI, Maui — A free lecture, "Learning to Speak Fish," will provide instruction on how to recognize dozens of fish species, including many unique to Hawaiian waters.

The lecture by marine researcher and educator Robin Newbold of Project SEA and the Reef Environmental and Education Project will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, 726 S. Kihei Road.

Newbold will explain how the public can get involved in a fish survey being conducted nationally.

Job training free on Maui

WAILUKU, Maui — Ka Lima O Maui will start its next job training session April 16.

The nonprofit agency provides free training and employment placement in a program financed by the state Department of Labor. Priority is given to people recently enrolled in public assistance programs.

Mayor Apana's budget on agenda

WAILUKU, Maui — The County Council's Budget and Finance Committee will hold a public hearing Wednesday on the county's budget for fiscal 2001-02.

Mayor James "Kimo" Apana has proposed a $300 million operating and capital improvement budget that includes a 2 percent across-the-board decrease in property taxes.

The hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the council chamber in Wailuku. Copies of the budget are available from the county clerk, the Office of Council Services, and public libraries.
