How we worship
International Baptist Church
Our pastor: David L. Wiitala
Our denomination or affiliation: Conservative Baptist
What we believe: "This church is a real Bible-preaching church and ... is really interested in people being able to find the forgiveness that God's grace offers. That's been a real keystone of the church," Wiitala said. "(We've) been a real loving group because of that."
Where we are: 20 Dowsett Avenue in Nu'uanu
Our numbers: 150
Our history: Founded Feb. 20, 1966, by James R. Cook, the great-great-great-great nephew of Capt. James Cook. IBC was originally located on the grounds of what is now Neal S. Blaisdell Center and moved to its current location in 1968.
We're excited about: IBC's 35th anniversary celebration.
"What we've done is we've invited our founder back, Dr. Cook, who had quite an impact on the Islands when he was here," Wiitala said about the anniversary celebration. "We want to honor this gentleman (who) gave a great start to our church."
Cook and his wife, Shirley, of Colorado, arrived Feb. 20 for the festivities, which included a banquet Feb. 23 at Pearl Country Club. Cook also took part in Sunday school, a celebration service and an evening service Feb. 25 at the church.
"There's nothing that is a greater joy to the heart of a man that started something than to be invited back," Cook said with a smile.
What's special about us: "A neat point that shows you how strong this church is: 35 years and I'm the third pastor," Wiitala said. "It's a real family church that loves its people."
Wiitala emphasized that their doors are always open to anyone.
"Anyone interested in learning about the Lord and the Scripture, they're invited to come," he said.
Cook also established International College and Graduate School in 1967, which is on the same grounds as IBC in Nu'uanu. ICGS is Hawai'i's only accredited Bible college and seminary. Contact: 595-6352, e-mail ibcoff@hawaii.rr.com or visit home.hawaii.rr.com/international/ibc.html
