Homer in 9th helps Hilo split with Huskies

Nalei Sooto's ninth-inning solo homer gave Hawai'i-Hilo a 6-5 victory in the second game of a doubleheader with Washington yesterday at UHH field.

The victory snapped the Vulcans' six-game losing streak.

The Huskies won the first game, 10-7, behind three RBIs by John Otness.

Sooto's homer over the left-field scoreboard was his first as a Vulcan.

Shaun Suzuki pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win. He gave up one hit and struck out two.

UHH moved to 5-25. Washington moved to 17-11.

MORE BASEBALL

• AJA state final set: Klayford Naka'ahiki pitched a four-hitter with two walks and 10 strikeouts, and Shayne Miura and Baba Lancaster each batted 3-for-5 with two homers as Hawai'i defeated Kaua'i, 9-1, in a Hawai'i State AJA Senior Tournament game yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

In the second game, O'ahu defeated Maui, 6-1.

O'ahu's Eugene Myers gave up one run and seven hits in eight innings, while striking out seven.

Kaua'i will play Maui in the consolation game today at 10 a.m. O'ahu will play Hawai'i in the championship at 12:30 p.m.

• Chaminade, Hilo split: Melissa Marquez doubled in two runs in the top of the 11th inning as Chaminade defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-2, in the first game of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader yesterday at UHH Field.

Marquez and the Vulcans' Kristine Kahoalii had shutouts through nine innings. In the top of the 10th, Chaminade's Christine Pascua singled in two runs. In the bottom half, Hilo tied the game on a two-run single by Leinani Hashida.

In the second game, Taysha Anderson pitched a three-hitter and Rachel Loo drove in two runs as Hilo defeated Chaminade, 4-1.

Chaminade moved to 17-16 overall and 8-8 in the PacWest. UHH is 20-16 and 6-8.

• BYUH sweeps HPU: Lyndi Frei and Summer George pitched shutouts as Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader from Hawai'i Pacific yesterday at BYUH Field in La'ie.

In the first game, Tami Layton drove in the game's only run in the seventh. Frei pitched a four-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts.

In the second game, George pitched a two-hitter with three walks and no strikeouts
