Police officer nabs furlough fugitive

A fugitive who has been on the loose since March 21 was caught yesterday morning by the same police officer involved in the high-profile arrest of prison escapee Kerbert Silva.

Officer Herbert Soria captured Arnold "Bully" Willets after he saw the 34-year-old fugitive driving a stolen white Ford Mustang erratically near Kalaeloa yesterday.

Willets and another person fled the stolen car after Soria activated his blue light on his patrol car, police said.

A search of Tripoli and Coral Sea streets found Willets who was arrested at 1:50 a.m. on suspicion of escape, a firearms offense and auto theft, police said. Willets' passenger remains at large, police said.

A handgun was found in the stolen car and a fingerprint analysis is being done to determine who's gun it was, police said.

Willets fled from the Laumaka Work Furlough Center March 21. Police thought they had captured Willets on March 28, but the man driving a stolen car turned out to be another fugitive, Alan McCabe, 39, with a striking resemblance to Willets.

McCabe's parole had been revoked and a warrant issued for his arrest. In addition, he may now be charged with auto theft. McCabe is at Halawa prison.

Silva escaped the Oahu Community Correctional Center on his 37th birthday, Jan. 17, by climbing over a 16-foot fence topped by razor wire. Soria chased down Silva on Jan. 25 in Makakilo, and Silva was returned to the prison. Silva again escaped on March 21, but was caught.

The 23-year-old man charged with robbing a Punaluu couple in their home and fleeing police by jumping into the ocean on Thursday has also been charged with a carjacking at the Ala Moana Shopping Center, police said.

Warren Elicker is accused of forcing his way into an occupied car at the Ala Moana Shopping on March 31, police said.

Police said Elicker forced the 18-year-old driver to drive and brandished a screwdriver and demanded the man's wallet and other items.

Elicker also ordered the man to make a withdrawal from his own ATM card, police said. Elicker later dropped off the man and stole his car, which was later found damaged and abandoned on the H-1 Freeway on April 1.

Police executed a search warrant on the car and recovered Elicker's wallet with his identification. Elicker was charged with first-degree robbery, kidnapping and auto theft. His bail was set at $100,000.
