Benny suffers bruised hand in Mets' loss to Montreal

MONTREAL — When last seen, Benny Agbayani was stepping out into the Canadian cold with a hard cast over his left hand and two fingers crossed on his right hand.

Hawai'i's Benny Agbayani was hit by a pitch and thrown out at the plate in the third inning yesterday.

Agbayani was scheduled for X-rays late last night to determine if he carried the Mets' worst break of the day. Broken bats and wasted opportunities had already combined to complete the Mets' dismal weekend.

Agbayani, a former St. Louis School and Hawai'i Pacific University standout, suffered a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch in the third inning of a 5-2 loss to Montreal yesterday. Later that inning, he was thrown out at the plate trying to score from third on Mike Piazza's grounder to third. Agbayani, who said he felt his hand throbbing, left the game.

Agbayani started in left field and was the Mets' leadoff batter. He was replaced by Darryl Hamilton.

New York also lost right fielder Timo Perez, who left in the fifth because of a strained left groin.

"I'm hoping that neither of the injuries are too serious," Mets manager Bobby Valentine said.

"I would say that they're not too good for tomorrow," Valentine said when asked to speculate on their availability for today's game. "Hopefully they're going to be OK."
