St. Louis senior Travis Lee took fifth place yesterday in the National High School Seniors Wrestling Championship in Easton, Del., and won All-American designation.

Three other Hawai'i state champions participated.

Lee, a three-time state champion, was in a field of 50 seniors (all state champions or runners-up) in the 119-pound division that was considered the best of the tournament, said his coach, Todd Los Banos.

Lee defeated Shawn Bunch, a two-time All-American and two-time Kansas state champion, 7-1, in the fifth-place match. It was payback for Bunch beating Lee, 8-5, in the championship bracket quarterfinals.

Earlier, Lee beat three-time West Virginia champion Matt Stevens, 15-6. In the consolation bracket he beat two-time Florida state champion Tymer Cooper, 13-2, and pinned three-time California state champ Jacob Palomino in 3:58.

Lee lost his chance to finish third when he was beaten 3-0 by three-time national champ Nick Simmons of Michigan. Simmons brought a career record of 195-0 and 190 pins to the event, Los Banos said.

Grant Nakamura of Baldwin High, also in the 119-pound class, pinned the Maine champion and defeated a two-time West Virginia champion, 4-3, before losing two in a row, the last to Cooper, to be eliminated.

Troy Takahashi of St. Louis lost both his 112-pound matches. Jansen Fukuda of Mid-Pacific Institute lost both his 160-pound matches.
