Culinary Calendar

April 18

Guest chef dinner at Pearl Dining Room, 5:30 p.m. April 18 at Leeward Community College. Culinary students join forces with chef/owner George Mavrothalassitis of Chef Mavro's Restaurant, and executive chef Eric Leterc of the Pacific Beach Hotel to present a four course dinner paired with wines. $55 per person plus tax and tip. 455-0475.

The Joy of Food and Wine benefit, two-day fund-raiser for the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, April 20 and 22. On April 20, Yves Garnier, chef de cuisine of La Mer at the Halekulani Hotel, hosts a champagne reception and four-course French meal in the Halekulani Ballroom; $250 per person. On April 22, the Grand Wine Tasting at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel showcases more than 200 wines with silent and live auctions, three wine seminars and French specialties served; $60 per person (seating is limited). Iron Chef Japanese Masaharu Morimoto joins Sam Choy as they guest-chef at Gourmet Affair 2001, a fund-raiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu, 6 p.m. April 21, Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom. Tickets: $200 per person includes dinner, live and silent auctions, fine wines.

Just Desserts, a class on eggless, dairyless baking with Eileen Towata, 9:30-11:45 a.m. April 21 at Lyon Arboretum. Learn to use whole-wheat pastry flour, flax meal, tofu, tahini, fruits and other ingredients to create quick breads, cakes, cookies. $22 per person; 988-0456.

Extremely Lunches, a hands-on/demonstration cooking class for kids at Kapi'olani Community College April 21. From 9 a.m.-noon, class is for kids ages 7-12; 1-4 p.m. class is for kids 12 to 17. Parents welcome to attend. Lori Wong is the instructor. $15 fee; 734-9211.

Ho'okipa 2001, a culinary gala showcasing and benefiting the students of Kapi'olani Community College's food Service and Hospitality Education Program, April 21. Celebrating Kapi'olani's royal jubilee, the event begins at 6 p.m. at the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel with 14 food stations, silent auction and entertainment.
