The Hawai'i Baptist Academy girls basketball team tried its best to slow St. Francis yesterday, but the Eagles could not stop the unbeaten Troubadours from marching to another victory.

St. Francis held off HBA for a 48-41 win at Damien to improve to 9-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II. The Troubadours will face second-place Kamehameha (8-1) tomorrow. Hawai'i Baptist drops to 6-2, with two weeks left in the regular season.
Hawaii Baptist's Gretchen Gerloff, left, and St. Francis' Deeann Nahale battle for a first-half rebound.
"I wouldn't say we're in the driver's seat yet," St. Francis coach Tony Tyler said, "but this win at least gets us in the car."
The Troubadours had to rev their engines to beat scrappy Hawai'i Baptist. The Eagles took an early lead and then spread the floor late in the first quarter. They used the same strategy in the second and third quarters to keep the game tight. St. Francis led 31-29 entering the final period.
"We had some girls in foul trouble and we did want to shorten the game a bit," HBA coach Deren Oshiro said. "But it wasn't really a stall. We felt we had an advantage on the perimeter and we wanted to take advantage of our quickness."
The Eagles used four quick guards sophomores Chelsea Yasuda and Kara Morita, junior Liza Onuma and senior Jessica Choy to find openings in the defense and score on short jumpers or layups.
Yasuda led the team with 14 points, and the four combined to score all but one of HBA's points.
But St. Francis, with a double-low post offense featuring Jamila Jarmon (15 points) and Elizabeth Narkon (10 points), took command in the fourth quarter. Jarmon scored nine of her points in that final period.
The Eagles closed to 43-41 with 1:01 left, but a layup by Adrianne Pereira and three free throws by Jarmon sealed it.
