NORTH SHORE

One killed, 10 hurt in Waimea crash

One man was killed and 10 people were injured — four seriously — in a head-on collision yesterday near Waimea Bay.

Police said an Isuzu station wagon with six people was heading south on Kamehameha Highway when it was struck by a 1992 Ford Escort with five people at about 2:30 p.m. Traffic investigators said the Escort was heading north when it crossed the center line and slammed into the Isuzu.

A 66-year-old man who was a passenger in the Isuzu sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene. Police said he was a visitor from Canada.

Two women in the Isuzu and two passengers in the Escort were taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where they were in guarded condition last night.

The driver of the Isuzu and two other passengers were taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, treated and released. Three children in the Escort also were treated for minor injuries at Wahiawa General and released.

Police are investigating the accident.

The fatality was the 20th this year, compared with 19 at the same time last year.

HONOLULU

Five rescued off reef runway

Five people were rescued yesterday after their 30-foot trimaran ran aground off the Honolulu International Airport reef runway.

Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said the vessel was in the Kalihi Channel and heading back to port when it ran aground on the Sand Island side of the runway.

On board were three men and two women.

The boat's owner was unable free the vessel and called for help. A fire rescue helicopter hoisted the five people from the deck and took them to the state's reef runway fire station.

One man suffered a cut on his foot, Soo said.
