UH softball team beats No. 18 Pacific

Desiree Duran pitched a five-hitter as Hawai'i defeated 18th-ranked Pacific, 4-2, yesterday to salvage a split of a softball doubleheader in Stockton, Calif.

The Tigers (37-7) won the opener, 9-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Cindy Ball and the hitting of Punahou School graduate Estee Okumura, who batted 3-for-4 and drove in four runs.

Duran (9-4) struck out four and walked three and the Wahine (32-13) scored in the second, third, fourth and seventh innings in never trailing.


BASEBALL

HPU falls: Corey Robles hit a three-run double to cap a five-run rally in the bottom of the eighth as Chico State defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 14-9, yesterday at Nettleton Stadium in Chico, Calif.

Corey Watts batted 4-for-5, including a two-run homer, to lead Chico State.

Hawai'i Pacific's Bryce Uegawachi had two hits and three RBIs.


TENNIS

Public Parks deadline: The entry deadline for the 75th O'ahu Public Parks Open tennis championships is tomorrow.

The tournament, which features men's and women's singles and doubles competition, is scheduled for April 21-22 at Diamond Head Tennis Center. The entry fee is $3.50 for singles and $5 per doubles team.

Clinic canceled: This weekend's National College Football Hall of Fame, Hawai'i Chapter football clinic at Cooke Field has been canceled because of the teachers strike.

Calling all teens: The Hawai'i Youth for Christ will be sponsoring teen volleyball games at Ala Moana Beach Park from noon to 4 daily (except Good Friday) until the teachers strike is over.

All middle school and high school students are welcome to play. There is no charge.
