UH volleyball team falls to BYU

In the thin air at Provo, Utah, the top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team's dreams vanished today.

With an overflow crowd of more than 6,000 chanting "overrated" in the Smith Fieldhouse, No. 2 Brigham Young earned a 31-20, 30-28, 30-23 victory and claimed the top seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs that begin next weekend.

The Cougars also earned the right to serve as host throughout the playoffs.

The Warriors, who fell to 17-5 and 12-4 in the MPSF, need to win the rematch tomorow night to claim the Pacific Division title and No. 2 seed in the playoffs. Long Beach State is 12-5 in the MPSF, but won the only meeting between the teams.

The Warriors served for game point at 29-26 in the first game and led 26-20 in the second before falling apart.

UH rallied from two eight-point deficits to tie the score at 20 in the third game. But the Cougars scored 10 of the match's final 13 points.

BYU improved to 19-3 and 13-3 in the MPSF.
