Educational TV, Web sites help students keep up during strike

The state Department of Education is offering a series of special instructional television programs that students can view at home.

They are also providing a list of educational Web sites.

Hawai'i Public Television also offers special programming.

Internet activities

The department suggests that parents initially visit www.websmartkids.org, which provides information on how to evaluate and use information found on the Web.

Instructional television

KHET: Monday, Thursday, Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

KHET: Tuesday, Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

CABLE: Ch. 56 (O'ahu), Ch. 44 (Maui, Hana), Ch. 13 (Moloka'i, Lana'i), Ch. 52 (Lahaina), Ch. 4 (East Hawai'i), Ch. 13 (West Hawai'i), Ch. 10 (Kaua'i), Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Language Arts programming will be scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Math programming will air on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Social Studies and Fine Arts programs will be scheduled in the afternoons. The mornings will be devoted to elementary level and afternoons will be devoted to secondary programs.

Here are some of the programs scheduled:

For younger children:

• "Between the Lions," a PBS KIDS series airs at 3 p.m. weekdays and is aimed at kids ages 4 to 7.

• Basic to Success, aimed at early readers, airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. This DOE series covers vocabulary development (April 17), phonics instruction (April 19), spelling (April 24) and comprehension and vocabulary (April 26).

For older children:

• "Algebra for All," 10:30 a.m. April 23, 25 and 27 and 11 a.m. April 16, 18, 20 and 30.

• "Math Works," 11:15 a.m. April 23, 25 and 27, and 10:30 a.m. April 16, 18, 20 and 30.

• "Unseen Life on Earth," about microbes and genes, 12:30 p.m. April 16, 23 and 30.

• "A World of Art: Works in Progress," 12:30 p.m. April 19 and 26.

• "The Constitution: That Delicate Balance," 12:30 p.m. April 20.

• "Ethics in America: Does Doctor Know Best?" 12:30 p.m. April 27.
