Lanai post office named for Hokama
President Bush yesterday signed into law a bill naming the U.S. Post Office building on Lana'i after retired Maui County Chairman Goro Hokama.
The Lana'i post office opened a year ago.
The 72-year-old labor-leader-turned-politician, served 41 years on the Maui County Council. He retired three years ago.
In retirement, Hokama continues to be active in community affairs as chairman of the Maui Memorial Medical Center Management Advisory Committee and vice chairman of the county Civil Service Commission.
NASA brings space to Kaua'i students
LIHU'E, Kaua'i The NASA Dryden Flight Research Center will bring aerospace to Kaua'i children and their parents and teachers in two workshops.
The workshop theme is built around the Helios, a solar-powered, high-altitude airplane that is flown by remote control. In June, Helios will go for a record altitude of 100,000 feet from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kaua'i. The flight is sponsored by NASA's Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology project.
At a workshop from 3:30 to 5 p.m. tomorrow at Kukui Grove Center, parents and children aged 7 to 14 will help build a model of Helios and can take home materials from NASA. The program will discuss scientific ventures going on in the Islands.
A teachers' workshop is slated from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the center. For reservations, call Cheryl Shintani at (808) 742-6838.
Kaua'i asks input on drainage plan
LIHU'E, Kaua'i Kaua'i County officials are asking for public comment on the proposed Storm Water Runoff System Manual.
The manual will be the basis for new county regulations on drainage requirements for new developments, pollution abatement, storm water retention systems and protection of structures.
The Department of Public Works will hold a meeting on the manual at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Lihu'e Civic Center meeting rooms.
