Canoe race canceled

Advertiser Staff

The CanoeSports/Outrigger Connection Coastal Relay canoe race scheduled for tomorrow has been canceled.

Race director Walter Guild said the course was expected to be dangerous due to strong winds and high waves forecast for O'ahu this weekend.

The event was supposed to feature two-person relay teams racing in one-person canoes. The paddlers on each team were supposed to alternate in the canoe throughout the 34-mile course from Kailua Bay to Magic Island.

Due to conflicting paddling events in the upcoming weeks, it will not be rescheduled.

Cycling repairs

Bicycle repair clinics will be held over the next three Thursdays at the Island Triathlon & Bike at the IT&B store at 569 Kapahulu Ave.

Clinics will be held for brake adjustment on April 19, gear adjustment and explanation on April 26, and wheel truing on May 3. Clinic fees are $10 and are taught by IT&B's mechanical staff.

Also, the Island Triathlon & Bike Cycle Swap will be held April 21 from 2-5 p.m. at St. Mark's Church on Kapahulu Avenue.

Those interested in buying or selling cycling equipment and accessories may call Frank Smith at 732-7227. Admission is $4.

Staying afloat

Those interested in attending a certified boating course to learn about boat handling and safety equipment should attend The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary boating safety course.

On both April 28 and May 5, from 1 to 5 p.m, the U.S. Coast Guard will teach the participants about boat handling, safety equipment, aids to navigation, knots, boating problems, trailering, anchoring and storing.

Classes will be held at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ. Instruction is free. Call Barbara Minton at 254-2601.
