Wahine water polo falls in four overtimes

Advertiser Staff

Erin Lezak scored with 1:55 left in the fourth overtime yesterday as sixth-ranked Santa Barbara outlasted fifth-ranked Hawai'i, 9-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Gauchos improved to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the MPSF. The Wahine, who led 4-1 after the first period, fell to 13-7 and 1-6.

Kelley Tiffany scored three goals for Santa Barbara. Christi Bardecki, Joanne Ansell and Andy Nishioka each scored two goals for the Wahine.

Hawai'i freshman Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored with 3:43 left in regulation to tie the score at 7 and send the game into overtime.

Nishioka put UH ahead in the first overtime, but Cathy Holmberg's goal in the second OT sent the match into sudden death.

Neither team scored in the third extra period, before Lezak's goal ended the marathon match.

• Fresno State routs Hilo: Bob Runyon pitched a three-hitter with one walk and 12 strikeouts as Fresno State defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 11-1, in a Western Athletic Conference game last night at Wong Stadium.

Casey McGehee drove in four runs, Ben Fritz had two RBIs and Brad Harper batted 3-for-4 with a homer for the Bulldogs.

Runyon's shutout bid was ended in the eighth inning after Bryce Watanabe singled in Keola Park.

Fresno State improved to 26-16 overall and 10-9 in the WAC. Hilo dropped to 5-27 and 3-17.

The teams will play again today and tomorrow.

The Cossacks (28-10) pounded HPU starter Peter Sonier for nine hits and eight earned runs in 1‡ innings.

Sonoma State led 11-0 after four innings.

Cossacks' starter Jared Silveira surrendered three hits in five innings, while walking two and striking out one. Josh Bell, Tom Gutwein, Nate MacBeth and Bryan Estes each pitched one inning of relief.
