Emergency phones installed in park

HONOKOHAU, Hawai'i — Two wireless emergency call boxes have been installed at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to assist visitors and park staff.

The equipment was donated by AT&T Wireless.

Lissa Guild of AT&T Wireless said park ranger Dave Kearns approached the company about installing the call boxes after the 1999 shooting death of ranger Steve Makuakane-Jarrell, 47.

"Visitors now can spend a day learning about both the cultural and natural resources, yet have easy access to local emergency services," said Geraldine Bell, superintendent of the Kaloko park and Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, both in the Kona region.

AT&T previously installed a wireless emergency call box at MacKenzie State Park and four units within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

'Field of Dreams' ghosts set to play

MANA, Kaua'i — The Ghost Players from the movie "Field of Dreams," a group of former college and semi-pro baseball players, will demonstrate their skills at 5 p.m. May 4 at the Pacific Missile Range Facility.

They will play a game against a missile range team and put on a youth clinic for kids aged 5 to 15 years of age. The group also will present a baseball comedy show, "The Greatest Show on Dirt." Parents should bring kids by 4:45 p.m. for the clinic.

The movie, "Field of Dreams," starring Kevin Costner, will be shown afterward at the base's outdoor theater.

The event is free and open to the public. To get there, turn left on Kaumuali'i Highway at Mile Marker 30 and follow the signs. Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended.
