ILH takes baseball pennant race to Aloha Stadium

O'ahu's private school league, unfettered by picket lines, takes its red-hot baseball pennant race to Aloha Stadium today for a quadruple-header.

Three teams are within a game of first place St. Louis in the typically competitive Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Co-second place 'Iolani (7-3) plays Maryknoll (3-7), which has won three of its last four, in the first game at 11 a.m. Damien (1-9) and Pac-Five (2-7) meet at 1:30.

At 4:30, it's St. Louis (8-3), which took over first place on Thursday with its third straight win, playing Punahou (7-4), which fell from first to fourth by losing two games this week.

Co-second place Mid-Pacific (7-3) plays Kamehameha (6-5) at 7 p.m.


COLLEGE BASEBALL

Komine improves to 8-1: Junior Shane Komine of Honolulu struck out 11 before a record crowd as Nebraska defeated Baylor, 6-2, in a showdown for the Big 12 Conference lead last night in Lincoln.

It was the fifth time this season, and 15th time in his career, that 1998 Kalani High graduate Komine, a consensus All-American last year, struck out 10 or more batters in a game. It was his fourth complete game this season and eighth straight winning decision, boosting his record to 8-1.

An overflow crowd of 3,658 set a record for Buck Belzer Stadium.

Komine gave up nine hits and allowed one runner to reach third base after surrendering a two-run homer in the second.

Fifth-ranked Nebraska has won 11 of its last 12. The Cornhuskers are 28-8 overall and 11-3 in the Big 12.


HPU falls to Sonoma: The Hawai'i Pacific baseball team lost 10-1 to Sonoma State yesterday at Rohnert Park, Calif.

It was the Sea Warriors' fourth loss in a row, and third straight game they allowed 10 or more runs, as they fell to 18-23. The 11th-ranked Cossacks improved to 29-10. It was the 10th meeting between the teams this year. Sonoma State leads the series 6-4.


SOFTBALL

Wahine-Fresno split: The University of Hawai'i softball team and Fresno State split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader yesterday at Fresno, Calif.

In the first game, 'Iolani graduate Mitzi Ing hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to account for the game's only run as Fresno State beat Hawai'i, 1-0.

In the second game, Desiree Duran pitched a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory, allowing no Bulldog runner past second base.

This was Hawai'i's first victory over the Bulldogs in Fresno.

With the split, Hawai'i is 33-13 overall and 2-2 in the WAC. Fresno State is 30-15 and 4-2.


WATER POLO

Wahine win two: Rebecca Angus, Eko Lapp, Traci Trochinski and Karin van Hoff scored two goals each, leading the University of Hawai'i Wahine to a 12-2 rout of Claremont-Mudd yesterday at the Long Beach State Invitational in Long Beach,Calif.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak as UH improved to 15-7.

UH came back later in the day to beat Cal Baptist, 17-9. Angus scored four goals and Chelsea Garner-Prohs added three to lead the Wahine.
