Handcrafted boxes on display at Ward gallery

By Virginia Wageman
Advertiser Art Critic

Nohea Gallery has put together an interesting selection of handcrafted boxes, each a one-of-a-kind work of art. Most are of wood — koa, sugi pine, mango, kiawe, kolohala, bloodwood, ebony and others — and many combine woods in intricate patterns. Other materials are used too, including stained glass, metals and collaged papers.

Out of the Box
Nohea Gallery, Ward Warehouse.
Through May 15.
596-0074.
Local and Mainland artists have created pieces for the show, including, from the Big Island, Jack Straka and Barry Ching, and from O'ahu, Ricardo and Judy Dellara and Henrik Van Ryzin. Deb Rosenbaum from Kaua'i contributed a whimsical box that holds a little tableau — one of the few pieces more sculptural than functional.

For the most part, these are boxes to be used. At the same time, each is worthy of display as a fine work of art.
