Achievers

Alice A. Fink of Kailua received the Rotary Club of Windward O'ahu's Service Above Self Award. The award is given annually to a Windward resident whose volunteerism has improved the quality of life of the community.

Ka'anoi Ka'apana of Honolulu received the 2001 Welcome Back Award for Lifetime Achievement for overcoming clinical depression. The Welcome Back Awards program, sponsored by Eli Lilly and Co., is implemented through a national committee of mental health community leaders. It recognizes individuals for outstanding accomplishments in psychiatry, primary care, community service, destigmatization and lifetime achievement. The company will honor Ka'apana, as well as four other individuals, at a ceremony in New Orleans and make a $7,500 contribution to a nonprofit organization of Ka'apana's choice.

Ruth Ono of Honolulu received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. The award is given to people who have significantly contributed to building bridges of international understanding, to fostering Japan-Hawai'i relationships and to strengthening the Cultural Center so that it can fulfill its mission.

Hawai'i Pacific University awarded the Robert E. Black Award for Excellence to Cynthia Lai and Guilherme Albieri, students at HPU who each received a $1,000 cash award. The award is given annually to an undergraduate and a graduate student for community service.
