Duran's shutout helps Wahine split

Desiree Duran shut out 15th-ranked Fresno State for the second time in 24 hours to lift the University of Hawai'i Wahine to a softball split yesterday at Fresno, Calif.
The Wahine (34-15) won the second game, 4-0, after losing the first 2-1 in 11 innings. The Western Athletic Conference doubleheader was watched by 2,325 at Bulldog Diamond.
The series split kept FSU (31-15) in first place at 6-3, a half-game ahead of UH, which is 5-3.
Before this weekend, Hawai'i had never won at Bulldog Diamond and had lost its last 12 to FSU. Duran (11-4) took care of that, firing a one-hitter Friday and three-hitter yesterday.
UH scored all four runs in the second inning on five hits, a walk and a hit batter.
Becky Witt's two-out single in the 11th scored the winning run in the first game. UH freshman Felicity Witt (17-9) went the distance, giving up 12 hits ö four to Becky Witt and stranding 12 Bulldogs. Felicity Witt walked two and struck out three.
Natalie Gonzales went 3-for-5 and scored the Wahine run on Stacie's Hirano's single in the third. UH stranded 15 runners in the game.
SMALL COLLEGES
HPU, Hilo split: Malia Sullivan pitched a two-hitter and Hawai'i Pacific rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 2-1 Pacific West Conference softball victory over Hawai'i-Hilo and a split of a doubleheader at Hilo yesterday.
In the first game, Hilo scored four runs in the fourth inning to defeat HPU, 4-1.
With Hilo leading 1-0 in the second game, Asbelle Acosta drove in Rachel Lacar with the tying run and Brandy Choy Foo singled in Lauren Okimoto with the go-ahead run in the seventh.
Hawai'i Pacific is 31-11 and 14-4 in the PacWest. Hilo is 23-17 and 10-8.
In another PacWest doubleheader, Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Chaminade at La'ie.
BYUH won the first game 2-1 when Marie Maese doubled in Maggie Reynolds with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
The Seasiders withstood a three-run seventh inning by the Silverswords to win, 4-3. BYUH is 17-30, 11-14 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 17-20 and 8-12.
