Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i water polo team completed a 5-0 run in the Long Beach (Calif.) Invitational with three victories yesterday.

Karin von Hoff scored seven goals in the victories over host Long Beach State (6-5) in double overtime, UC Irvine (10-5) and Cal Baptist (12-6).

The Wahine, which improved to 18-7, trailed 3-1 at halftime against Long Beach, before holding The Beach scoreless in the second half. Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored the decisive goal with 1:22 in the second overtime.

SURFING

• Ballard third: Rochelle Ballard of Kaua'i placed third in the women's Sun Smart Classic yesterday in 3- to 4-foot surf at Bell's Beach, Australia.

Ballard easily advanced through the quarterfinals and semifinals yesterday, but managed to catch just one decent wave in the four-woman final. Neridah Falconer of Australia dominated the final to take the $5,000 first prize.

Ballard's best scoring wave in the final scored 6.17, but none of her other rides received a score higher than 3.0. Lynette MacKenzie of Australia placed second and received $2,500. Ballard earned $2,000.

Megan Abubo of Waialua tied for fifth and received $1,200. The event was part of the women's World Qualifying Series, and did not count toward the World Championship Tour standings.

In the men's Rip Curl Pro, also at Bell's Beach yesterday, Hawai'i surfers Sunny Garcia and Andy Irons advanced to the quarterfinals.

Garcia, the defending world champion, defeated former world champ Mark Occhilupo of Australia in the fourth round.

Irons defeated Australian Jake Paterson.

CORRECTION

• Frasco went to national meet: Ryan Frasco, a 1993 Kamehameha Schools graduate from Kane'ohe, finished seventh of 56 entrants on the parallel bars, earning All-America rating, and qualified for the finals on still rings in the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships in Seattle in April 1996. A report in yesterday's Advertiser said another gymnast was the first from Hawai'i to qualify for a national meet.
