Mid-Pacific beats Punahou for sole lead in ILH baseball

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Pat McGuigan pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Mid-Pacific Institute rallied to beat Punahou, 5-4, yesterday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball at Ala Wai Field.

Mid-Pacific's Isaac Omura couldn't quite beat the throw to Punahou first baseman Chad Moriyama.

MPI (9-3) took over sole possession of the ILH lead, while Punahou dropped to 8-5.

McGuigan, a junior right-hander, allowed just three hits and let only one runner advance to third base.

"This was the longest I ever threw," McGuigan said. "I was just keeping the ball down and changing speeds, trying to keep them off balanced. When you get ahead of the batters, it's easier to throw strikes."

Mid-Pac took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Isaac Omura and Clint Copulos, and a sacrifice fly by Ricky Bauer.

Punahou countered with four runs in the bottom of the first on a three-run double by Kyle Seminara and an RBI single by Brett Service.

McGuigan came in to get the final out of the inning, then shut down the Buffanblu the rest of the way.

"We had pitchers warming up every inning, we didn't know how long he would go," Owls coach Dunn Muramaru said of McGuigan.

Mid-Pacific took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Matt Inouye and a run-scoring single by Omura.
