Water in Mokule'ia area contaminated

Advertiser Staff

Residents and visitors in the Mokule'ia area should not drink tap water from the Mokuleia Land Company's water system without boiling it first because of contamination, the state Department of Health said today.

The Mokuleia Land Company has told residents the water is contaminated with fecal coliform bacteria.

The Health Department recommends residents boil tap water vigorously for one to three minutes before drinking the water or using it in food preparation.

About 100 people use the water system, including the Mokuleia Beach Colony and Camp Mokuleia, according to Health Department and Mokuleia Land Company officials.

The Health Department told Mokuleia Land Company to locate the source of contamination, flush out their water lines and take water samples today. Mokuleia Land Company officials said they fixed a chlorine machine and were trying to raise the level of chlorine in the water, the Health Department said.

If no contamination is found in the samples today, the Health Department said the water ban could be lifted as early as tomorrow
