Kapena, Koa'uka will play luncheon

Kapena, a contemporary Hawaiian group whose repertoire includes pop, reggae, Jawaiian and Tongan melodies, will perform in a Secretary's Day concert April 25 at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom.

Kapena, featuring Kelly Boy DeLima, Tiva Tatofi, Timo Tatofi and Eddie Teo, is a Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning ensemble with 15 albums to date. Kapena has toured extensively throughout the South Pacific, Japan, Las Vegas and several states including Utah, California and Colorado.

Koa'uka, an up-and-coming act, also will be on the bill. The group features Bronson Rosa, West Mulivai, Kaleo Kapwa and Keahi Lau. Koa'uka soon will launch a Mainland tour.

Free outdoor concerts planned at 'Iolani Palace

A series of five free performances, part of the Third Annual Living Masters Concert Series, will be launched in May at the Coronation Pavilion at 'Iolani Palace.

All shows will be from 2 to 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month. Those attending may bring beach mats or chairs for seating. The schedule:

  • May 6: Cantonese opera with Peter Soong and Meelin Hui.
  • June 3: Richard Ho'opi'i, slack-key wizard.
  • July 1: A gagaku — ancient Japanese classical music — performance with the Rev. Masatoshi Shamoto and ensemble.
  • Aug. 5: Kenny Endo and his group, in a selection of Japanese festival music.
  • Sept. 2: To be announced.

All performers are masters and apprentices in the Folk Arts Program, designed and developed to perpetuate traditional arts and crafts of Island ethnic groups.

The programs are jointly sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Folk Arts
