Hawai'i residents are willing to pay more taxes as long as the money is used to improve public schools, according to a public opinion poll sponsored by the Department of Education.

Nearly two-thirds of the 620 people surveyed in the Hawai'i Opinion Poll on Public Education said they would support a small increase in the state general excise tax or income tax to benefit education. Three-quarters said they support increased efforts to have private companies and individuals contribute to schools.

The poll also revealed that residents believe school safety, teacher qualifications and student discipline are the top three indicators of school quality.
