Kailua event raises $49,000

The I Love Kailua Town Party earned a record gross of $49,000 this year from the annual event, which raises money for community beautification and maintenance of such projects.

Net earnings for projects might be more like $16,000, said Lyn Turner, president of the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle, which sponsors the event. Still, Turner is optimistic that with this year's net income and next year's party profits, the organization can begin Phase 3 of the Kailua Corridor project, the landscaping of the median along Kailua Road.

"We need about $25,000 to get started," Turner said, adding that the Outdoor Circle would like to extend landscaping to the first church. With the project retaining its theme, naupaka bushes and fan palms would be planted.

Zippy's moves for renovation

Zippy's in Kane'ohe has moved its operations to an old delicatessen on William Henry Road this week, making it possible for a renovation project to begin at its Kamehameha Highway location.

The diner, now located at the old Fujii Delicatessen across the street from Bank of Hawai'i, is open 24 hours and is serving the same menu. Bakery items are also available.

The renovation project calls for the demolition of the present Zippy's restaurant. When the new building opens in about six months, it will have the added feature of a deli.

Postal vehicle hits picket

A U.S. Postal Service vehicle struck a teacher walking the picket line Tuesday at 'Aiea Intermediate School, according to police.

Police said the postal carrier was allowed to enter the school to deliver mail but when he tried to leave, the parking lot was blocked by the picket line. Officers said no citations were issued or arrests made because no one was injured.

Hawaii State Teachers Association spokeswoman Danielle Lum said A. Stephen Brewer, 51, an eighth-grade history teacher and picket captain at the school, refused treatment at the scene.

Gary Yamamoto, acting post office operations manager for the Honolulu station, said the incident was not intentional. The Postal Service has decided not to deliver mail to the school until the strike is over to avoid further incidents, he said.

Public school teachers have been on strike since April 5.

Assistant Police Chief Stephen Watarai said that if drivers need to go through a picket line, they should look for a police officer or the picket captain for assistance getting through.

Packing house meeting's topic

The University of Hawai'i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and the Hawai'i Farm Bureau Federation will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the possibility of building a new packing house and food-processing facility on O'ahu,

The meeting will be at the Urban Garden Center, 962 Second St., in Pearl City.

Industry input is needed to determine if there is enough "paying demand" to plan, finance and build a processing facility in Leeward or Central O'ahu or on the North Shore. The facility would be export-focused.
