Nishimoto, Ralbovsky tied in Mid-Pac golf

Professionals Dan Nishimoto and Kevin Ralbovsky fired 4-under-par 68s yesterday to share a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the 2001 Mid-Pacific Open at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

David Foster and Casey Nakama, the 1996 Mid-Pacific champion, are at 69. Craig Sasada and eight-time Mid-Pacific champion Lance Suzuki are at 70.

Nick Mason and Shannon Sibayan shot 71s and were tied as the low amateurs.

Defending champion Beau Yokomoto opened with a 79.

The second round in all flights (Pro, championship, A , B and seniors) will be held today with cuts being made for the final two rounds.

GYMNASTICS

Junior Olympic regionals: Twenty-six of Hawai'i's best optional level women gymnastics will compete at the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics Region 2 Championship today through Sunday at Kirkland, Wash., They will face competition from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

The 26 gymnasts representing Hawai'i were chosen based on their all-around scores at the 2001 State Championship.

Regionals is the highest competition for level 8 gymnasts and a national qualifier for level 9 and 10 participants.

SAILING

UH finishes strong: The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team finished fourth at the Moody Trophy and the Wahine team finished seventh at the Dellenbaugh Women's Trophy, this past weekend.

Hawai'i's coed team finished with 249 points. Harvard captured first place with 210 points.

The Wahine team's total score was 188 points, while Boston University was first with 116.

SOFTBALL

Wahine in key WAC series: The University of Hawai'i opens a crucial Western Athletic Conference series against Portland State this weekend.

The Wahine play a 5 p.m. doubleheader today and another doubleheader at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Wahine (34-15, 5-3 WAC) are a half-game behind leader Fresno State (31-15, 6-3). Hawai'i leads third-place Portland State (17-21, 3-2) by 1à games.

VOLLEYBALL

High school signees: Three high school seniors who play for the ASICS Rainbow Volleyball Club have signed with Pac-West Conference colleges, a club spokesman said yesterday.

Kaala Lo of Mililani High, a three-time OIA West Player of the Year, has accepted a scholarship offer from Brigham Young University-Hawai'i.

Nohealani Burgess, a two-sport athlete from Sacred Hearts Academy, and Kimberly Tano, an all-state middle blocker for St. Francis, signed with Western New Mexico. Tano was instrumental in St. Francis earning its first state tournament appearance last fall.

WEIGHTLIFTING

State Championships: The Hawai'i State Open Weightlifting Championships will be held tomorrow at Windward Mall Shopping Center.

Competition will begin at 2 p.m. on the Center Stage.

There will be 17 lifters including three Junior National Championship silver medalists — Bryce Yamauchi, Kristel Ajifu, and Chani Matsui.

Competition will be in several age group and weight categories.

Junior National Champion Kyle Yamauchi will miss this competition because he will be competing in the Senior National Championships this weekend in Shreveport, La.
