Ouside Notes

The Kaiola Canoe Club and FM97 are offering a canoe race, volleyball tournament and tug-of-war competition on Sunday. All events begin at 8 a.m. at Hanamaulu Beach Park.

The cost of the canoe race is $100 per team; the cost for the volleyball tournament is $50 per team (three men, three women); the cost of the tug-of-war is $100 per team (five men and five women).

HONORS

Lana'i team wins state title: The Lana'i Physical Fitness Team captured its 25th consecutive state championship at the Kaneohe Marine Corps base last month.

The team is now raising funds to compete in the national competition May 22 in San Diego.

LIFEGUARDING

Junior lifeguard program: There will be several five-day courses to familiarize teenagers with ocean and beach skills. The course will include an introduction to ocean safety, CPR, first aid and surf rescue techniques. The classes are open to boys and girls who are between the ages of 13-17 on June 1.

The sessions are: June 18-22; June 25-29; July 9-13; July 16-20; July 23-27; July 30-Aug. 3; and Aug. 6-10.
