Photographer shoots Hollywood women as coffee-table book

By Jocelyn McClurg
USA Today

Lots of mother-daughter bonding goes on in the intimate photographs in "Hollywood Moms" (Abrams, $29.95).

We've seen zillions of photos of Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, but photographer Joyce Ostin shows us a different side of these overexposed celebrities with her portrait of Madonna and child (daughter Lourdes Leon), and her shot of Lopez getting a kiss from her mom, Guadelupe.

The coffee-table book, in stores this week, features more than 50 black-and-white photos of stars with their mothers or daughters, and sometimes both.

Beautiful genes seem to be passed from one generation to the next, as with Jaclyn Smith and her pretty daughter, Spencer-Margaret; or Joanna Poitier and attractive offspring Sydney and Anika.

Other pairings include cover girls Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson; Sela Ward and her little girl, Annabella Ray; Rosie O'Donnell with adopted daughter Chelsea (one of the few children not facing the camera).

Many women pose with their mothers. Among them: Sheryl Crow, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rita Wilson, Hilary Swank and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Whatever the generation, lots of love is expressed in the brief text.

Ostin, a breast cancer survivor, is donating proceeds to breast and ovarian cancer research.

In Style magazine has first serial rights and is running a number of photos in its May issue, on newsstands this week.
