Honoka'a fire damages home

HONOKA'A, Big Island — Firefighters on the Big Island fought a blaze at a garage and home in Honoka'a Friday evening.

The 20-foot-by-20-foot building on Kalopa Mauka Road was engulfed in flames and had collapsed when firefighters arrived shortly after 7 p.m.

No one was injured.

Neighbors had been throwing buckets of water onto the blaze when the first fire engine arrived.

Firefighters worked until 8 p.m. to extinguish the fire, which had spread to a pickup truck parked near the building.

The owner of the building, Charles Nobriga, estimated the damage to the garage and dwelling at $5,000 and damage to the truck at $15,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the police department.
