Achievers

Lena Ching, a graduate student of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's fiber art program, received a $500 Elsa Takesue Memorial Scholarship awarded by the Fibers Hui of Hawaii. The scholarship is an annual award that aims to assist students to pursue further education in the field of fiber arts.

Mary B. Vail of Las Vegas, formerly of Pearl City and a 1982 graduate of the University of Hawai'i, was one of seven recipients of the 7th annual Nevada Women's Role Model Award from southern Nevada. The award recognizes some of Nevada's outstanding women, their achievements and their impact on society.

The winners of the Child Abuse Prevention Poster and Essay Contest, sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, are: Kerri-Ann S. Ilar, a kindergartner at Wailupe Valley Elementary; Sam Benzing, a first-grader at Enchanted Lakes Elementary; Christian I. Kim, a fourth-grader at Kailua Elementary; Caitlin Foster, a fifth-grader at Holomua Elementary; Sara Ohashi, a sixth-grader at Sunset Beach Elementary; Todd Yonemura, an eighth-grader at Hongwanji Mission School; and Kurt Nagamine, a 10th-grader at Mid-Pacific Institute.
