HPU wins third straight PacWest division softball title

Hawai'i Pacific won its third consecutive Pacific West Conference Pacific Division softball championship yesterday by sweeping a doubleheader from Chaminade at HPU Windward Field.

In the first game, Jessica Parra pitched a three-hitter with two walks and two strikeouts as HPU defeated Chaminade, 5-1.

Holly Garcia and Kim Fukumoto each had two RBIs for HPU.

The Sea Warriors won the second game, 2-1, behind a seven-hitter by Malia Sullivan.

Both Sea Warrior runs were unearned.

HPU improved to 33-13 overall and 18-6 in the PacWest. Chaminade dropped to 17-22 and 8-14.


GOLF

• Stubblefield takes lead: Larry Stubblefield fired a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the 2001 Mid-Pacific Open at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Stubblefield has a 54-hole total of 5-under 211. Keith Kollmeyer, the only other golfer to break 70, shot a 69 and was at 213.

Dan Nishimoto, the second-round leader, struggled to a 75 and was at 214.


MEETING

• QB Club: Don Murphy, owner of Murphy's Bar & Grill and president of Na Koa Football Club, will be the featured speaker at the QB Club tomorrow at the Pagoda International ballroom.

A lunch buffet will be served at 11:30, followed by the program at noon. Joining Murphy will be longtime QB Club member Chris Farias, who will give a history about the club, and Mel DeLaura and Trey Johnson, the University of Hawai'i's strength and fitness coaches. VOLLEYBALL

• Japan beats U.S.: Japan defeated the United States, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17 yesterday in men's volleyball in Tokyo.

Japan hit .420, while holding the U.S. to .190 to improve to 3-2 in the series.

On Thursday, Japan swept the U.S. 25-21, 25-18, 25-23. Former University of Hawai'i star Clay Stanley led the U.S. with 11 kills.

The series ends today at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.


WATER POLO

• Wahine rout Pacific: The University of Hawai'i Water Polo team displayed a balanced scoring and defensive effort as they routed Pacific 11-1 yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Joanne Ansell, Karin van Hoff, Chelsea Garner-Prohs, and Eko Lapp each scored twice for UH and goalie Christa Tackaberry had a season high 13-saves.

Fifth ranked UH improved to 19-7 overall and 3-6 in the MPSF. Sixteenth ranked Pacific fell to 6-18, 0-10.
