Dress for $1, help women return to work

By Catherine E. Toth

Get a big bag — and bang — for your buck at the YWCA's Buck-a-Bag Sale this weekend.

Take your pick from hundreds of donated dresses, suits, shoes and accessories, and fill up a bag for just $1.

The sale is presented by the Y's Clothes Closet, a project developed to provide women with revitalized clothing for job interviews and the first weeks of work. Many are making the difficult transition from welfare, prison, domestic and substance-abuse recovery programs.

"We really want to help the woman in need," said Madeline Harcourt, the women's retail development coordinator who developed this program in 1998.

Proceeds benefit the Clothes Closet Store and programs for helping women return to work.

The sale will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Y's Laniakea Center, 1040 Richards St. There will be no limit on the number of bags you can buy.

The program is also seeking donations and volunteers. For more information about helping out or about the clothing sale, call 538-7061 ext. 235.
