Lunch for kids provided today

The city will continue its program today to feed children in low-income areas a hot lunch at six O'ahu parks.

Hundreds of children who are missing school meals because of the prolonged teachers' strike lined up Friday for a lunch of chili and rice with a hot dog.

The lunch program will be held from 11 a.m to noon today at Nanakuli Community Park, Wai'anae District Park, Papakolea Community Park, Kalihi Valley Park, Waipahu District Park and Waimanalo District Park.

City officials will decide on a day-to-day basis how long to continue the program based on the length of the teachers strike, which began April 5.

Zoo wins accreditation

The Honolulu Zoo, established in 1947, was accredited recently by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.

The association reviews accreditation every five years. Investigations of animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, safety and other efforts are conducted.

"As the entire zoo industry standards have climbed, the Honolulu Zoo has also been improving, particularly in the area of conservation and education," said Ken Redman, zoo director. "The recent accreditation affirms our commitment to providing the best zoo experience possible for our visitors."

The zoo, located within Kapi'olani Park in Waikiki, has more than 1,250 animals representing 300 species. For information, call 971-7174, or visit www.honoluluzoo.org.
