Hawai'i Pacific sweeps UH-Hilo in baseball

Wade Taguchi and Bryce Uegawachi each had three hits to lead a 16-hit offense that lifted Hawai'i Pacific to a 14-6 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo and a sweep of a college baseball doubleheader at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

In the first game, HPU scored all of its runs in the second inning for a 7-4 victory.

The Sea Warriors finished their season 20-24. Hilo is 5-31.

Taguchi hit two home runs in the second game, including a two-run shot in the first inning and a bases-empty homer in the seventh. He finished with four RBIs.

Keola Park hit a three-run homer in the seventh to close the Vulcans to 14-6.

In the first game, HPU's Jeremiah Yacap's grand slam capped the seven-run second inning.

SOFTBALL

• Chaminade-Hilo split: Kayla Kahuli hit a three-run homer in a four-run first inning and Nancy Vega hit a solo homer in the third inning to boost Hawai'i-Hilo to a 13-3 victory over Chaminade in the second game of a Pacific West Conference softball game at Palolo Field.

In the first game, Chaminade defeated Hilo, 3-1.

Chaminade's Christine Pascua hit a two-run homer in first inning of the first game, and added another two-run shot in the fifth inning of the second game.

Chaminade is 18-23 overall, 9-15 in the PacWest. Hilo is 26-18, 13-9.

VOLLEYBALL

• Stanley leads USA: Clay Stanley of Honolulu led Team USA with 17 kills in a five-set loss to Japan yesterday before more than 7,000 at Tokyo. Scores were 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-12. Japan won the series 4-2.

Stanley had 35 kills in the series, but played only one game on Thursday. The Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i alum hit .360.

Team USA will return to the Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs, Colo., today.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Smith wins at Long Beach: University of Hawai'i's Cheryl Smith sprinted to first place in the 5,000-meter run at the Long Beach (Calif.) Invitational Saturday.

Smith out ran her nearest opponent, Christine Riel of Long Beach, by more than 54 seconds. She finished in 16 minutes, 52.03 seconds, a personal best and Wahine record. The previous UH record was 17:01.2 by Karen Curtis in 1982.

Hawai'i's Casey McGuire-Turcotte also set a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.62.

GOLF

• McLachlin eighth: Punahou graduates Parker McLachlin and Jim Seki finished tied for eighth and tied for 26th, respectively, at the U.S. Intercollegiate Golf Tournament completed yesterday at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

McLachlin, of UCLA, finished with a one-under 212. Seki, of Stanford, finished at 217.

Arizona won the two-day tournament with an 837. Chris Nallen of Arizona won medalist honors with a 7-under 206.

BASKETBALL

• Fourth straight title: St. Francis High clinched its fourth straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II basketball championship Saturday night with a 36-19 victory over Lutheran at McCabe Gym.

The Troubadours are 12-0 with two games remaining. Kamehameha's Division II team and Hawai'i Baptist are 8-3 and cannot catch St. Francis.

As they have all season, Liz Narkon and Jamila Jarmon's controlled the backboards to lead St. Francis' defense, which has held 12 opponents to 32.3 points per game. Narkon, an all-state volleyball player, led scoring Saturday with 14.

After two remaining regular-season games, the Troubadours advance to the ILH postseason tournament with the third- through seventh-place teams from Division I next week.
