AFL-CIO gives statement

 •  ACLU files suit to protect protesters

The Hawai'i State AFL-CIO — an umbrella labor organization made up of various unions — has issued a statement opposing next month's Asian Development Bank meeting at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

Organization president Thaddeus Tomei yesterday sent out a copy of a resolution adopted by the executive board April 12. The group's statement describes the bank as "an unaccountable international institution that makes loans benefiting the rich that are paid by the poor."

Government and tourism officials have heralded the international gathering as an economic and political boost from an institution that helps spur development. But activists plan to protest the bank's policies as exploiting the poor and harming the environment.

The labor association resolution also came out in support of peaceful and lawful protests against the ADB and expressed opposition to "the growing attacks on civil and labor rights in Hawai'i."
