Fund-raiser to help ill boy

A fund-raiser has been scheduled for this weekend to help 4-year-old 'O Keanu Kama return to the Mainland for a follow-up on his cancer treatment.

Last April, 'O Keanu Kama was diagnosed with stage-four cancer of the sympathetic nervous system.

A cancerous tumor, attached to the adrenal gland above the right kidney, was removed May 1 along with his gland.

But the cancer had spread into they boy's hip bone, leg, chest, skull and bone marrow.

Aggressive chemotherapy began, first here and then at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center in Maryland, where he also received a stem-cell transplant.

Now in remission, Kama and his mother, Kukana Kama, are home but must soon return to the Mainland for a check-up and tests.

To defray the cost of the trip and to pay bills from the previous trip, the Friends of 'O Keanu K. Kama will hold a fund-raiser concert from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday at He'eia State Park in Kane'ohe.

Tickets for adults are $10; for children 7-12, $3; and free to children 6 years and younger.
