Four people treated after propane leak

A propane leak injured four people and forced police to close down a Mapunapuna street today, a fire official said.

Six fire companies, including two hazardous materials trucks, responded to the alarm shortly after 6 a.m. on 2864 Mokumoa St., said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

A valve or pipe on a propane truck sprung a leak and released the fuel into the air, Soo said. The driver of the truck, a 59-year-old man, tried to shut off the propane valve but suffered a burn to his hand, Soo said. The truck was carrying about 2,000 gallons of propane, Soo said.

Medical personnel treated three people who complained of throat irritation and may have inhaled some propane, Soo said. The two men and a woman were inside a nearby building, Soo said.
