The Left Lane
Still famous

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

Although the Famous Amos chocolate chip cookie business he created no longer is his, Wally "Famous" Amos, the Island resident, inspirational kazoo-playing author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker, still is famous. He emerges on A&E's "Biography: The Famous Wally Amos: The Cookie King," at 5 and 9 p.m. tonight (Oceanic 33, digital 547), talking about his many lives, as the first-ever black talent agent at William Morris Agency (he represented Simon and Garfunkel and the Supremes), as an advocacy of literacy (he is spokesman for Literacy Volunteers of America), about his failed marriages and the one that lasted (21 years with Christine) and yes, about how the cookie empire crumbled.

The munch bunch

The folks at Big Island Candies, purveyors of upscale munchies with a decidedly local twist, are at it again, introducing more incredible edibles like Da-Kines White Dipped Sakura Arare (mochi crunch, half-dipped in white chocolate, pictured); Da-Kines Pistachio Crunch (pistachio pieces, half-dripped in milk chocolate); and Da-Kines Crispy Crunch (crispy puffed rice bars, half-dipped in milk chocolate). Also new: a chocolate-free Golden Macadamia Nut Brownie. To order, call 1-800-935-5510 or, if you're Hilo-bound, check out these and other delectable sweets (cookies and chocolates galore) at the factory-store, 585 Hinano St. (808) 935-8890.
