Hawksbill turtles focus of 'Reeftalk'
KEALAKEHE, Hawai'i Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist Larry Katahira, who has studied hawksbill turtles for 10 years, will show slides during a "Reeftalk" presentation Tuesday in the Kealakehe High School library.

Voyaging group's benefit is Sunday
LAHAINA, Maui Hui O Wa'a Kaulua, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to perpetuate the traditions and heritage of Polynesian voyaging and Hawaiian canoes, will have a benefit dinner Sunday.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. with a welcoming at Kamehameha Iki Park followed by dinner next door on the oceanfront grounds of Feast at Lele in the 505 Front Street complex. The event also includes a silent auction, entertainment and a presentation by Hokule'a navigator Chad Babayan.
Proceeds will benefit Hui O Wa'a Kaulua's youth programs. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased directly from the hui at Kamehameha Iki Park. For more information, call (808) 661-9290.
Maui DMV adds registration days
WAILUKU, Maui The Maui County Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing is now conducting vehicle registration four days a week instead of three at its Kihei and Lahaina satellite offices.
Registration services at the two offices are available Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The Makawao office is open Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
The hours of operation for all satellite offices are 8-10:45 a.m. and noon-3:30 p.m. For information on licensing or road exams, call the Wailuku office at (808) 270-8080.
Sierra Club events for May announced
The Sierra Club's Maui group has three events planned for May.
The first is a two-hour guided hike through Ka'eleku Caverns in Hana on May 6. The three-quarter-mile hike is limited to 15 people; minimum age is 8. Hikers should wear long pants and shoes; hardhats, hip packs with water bottles, gloves and lights will be provided.

A service trip at 'Ohe'o is set for May 12-13, with overnight camping at the National Park Service's Kipahulu campgrounds. Participants will help maintain the scenic area, which is part of Haleakala National Park.

A moderate, four-mile hike into the lush East Maui watershed and bamboo groves of Kailua Valley is planned for May 27. Hikers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Ha'iku Community Center.
A liability waiver from East Maui Irrigation Co. is required to attend the hike. Waivers must be requested by phone well in advance and must be picked up five days prior to the hike. To request a waiver, call EMI's Pa'ia office at (808) 579-9516. To register for the hike, call Dart.
Maui's annual paint 'Drop and Swap' set
WAILUKU, Maui The County of Maui's Recycling Section and Community Work Day program will conduct the annual "Drop and Swap Paint Exchange" from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Residents may drop off usable paint or stop by to pick up some free paint at the following locations: Wailuku Community Center, Pukalani Terrace Center, Lahaina Recreational Center and Kalama Park in Kihei.

Program examines marine food chain
MA'ALAEA, Maui "Eat or Be Eaten" is the name of a May 5 program for parents and kids that will look at the marine food chain.
The event, geared to children ages 6 to 12, is part of the Pacific Whale Foundation's Family Ocean Discovery Series. It will run from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Maui Ocean Center. Participants should meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Pacific Whale Foundation's Marine Resource Center and Store at Ma'alaea Harbor Village adjacent to the Maui Ocean Center.
