56th Punahou Relays on Saturday
Advertiser Staff
Public school track and field athletes return to classes tomorrow, but they will not be participating in the 56th annual Punahou Relays on Saturday.
"They won't be in 'meet condition' yet and they could get hurt," OIA track and field coordinator John Kauinana said yesterday.
With only eight private-school teams participating, trials tomorrow will not be necessary, Punahou assistant athletic director Jeff Meister said.
In addition to the six Interscholastic League of Honolulu teams, Hawai'i Prep from the Big Island and St. Anthony of Maui are entered.
Starting times Saturday are 11:30 a.m. for field events and 12:45 p.m. for the Hawai'i's Fastest Human 100-meter races, which settles bragging rights among the islands adult sprinters. Incorrect times were printed in yesterday's Coming Up.
MORE PREPS
Missing: Shawna Weeks of 'Aiea was omitted from OIA West softball honorable mention published last Wednesday.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Wong, Metzger rise: Kevin Wong exacted a small measure of revenge when he and new partner Stein Metzger also a Punahou graduate upset Olympic gold medalists Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana at the Volleyhut Clearwater (Fla.) Invitational.
Wong and Rob Heidger lost to Blanton and Fonoimoana in Sydney last summer, but Sunday Wong and Metzger ousted the top seeds, 19-21, 21-15, 19-17, in a 65-minute semifinal. The fourth seeds from Hawai'i lost to third-seeded Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers in the final, 21-15, 21-16. Wong and Metzger won $9,500.
In the women's draw, Honolulu's Lia Young and Danalee Bragado, playing on different teams, tied for ninth.
GOLF
Wahine last: A 10-shot improvement was not enough to boost the University of Hawai'i out of last place at the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
The Wahine remain seventh going into today's final round in Lewisville, Texas. They are at 646 after rounds of 328-318, nine shots out of sixth. Defending champion Tulsa leads with 13-over-par 589.
Tulsa's Stacy Prammanasudh (70-143) is the individual leader by one stroke.
Junior Melanie Matsumura leads the Wahine, and is tied for 18th, at 76-156. Her teammates are bunched at 163 (Rene Krause, 79), 164 (Megan McGuinness and Kristin Scholl, both 82) and 166 (Bobbie Arakawa, 81).
RUNNING
End of trail: The Schofield-Wheeler Trails End 10K run scheduled for Sunday has been canceled, according to the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club.
The club said it was unable to get authorization from the military to hold the run.
