UH team's Theocharidis named top MPSF player

University of Hawai'i outside hitter Costas Theocharidis was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball Player of the Year, the conference announced today.

The Warriors' setter, Kimo Tuyay, of San Diego, was named co-Freshman of the Year with Long Beach State's Scott Touzinsky.

Theocharidis, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, was joined on the All-MPSF first team by teammate Vernon Podlewski, who plays libero.

Podlewski is a junior from Hai'limaile, Maui.

Theocharidis, of Orestiada, Greece, leads UH with 417 kills this season, and has a .351 hitting average. He was American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American last season.

Three Brigham Young players made the first team. The Warriors and Cougars play today in the semifinals of the conference tournament in Provo, Utah.

BYU's Carl McGown was named Coach of the Year.

Hawai'i middle blocker Dijan Miladinovic was named to the second team, along with UCLA outside hitter Scott Wong of Pearl City.

UH outside hitter Eyal Zmet was named to the third team.

Tuyay and UH middle blocker Brenton Davis, of Las Vegas, were honorable mentions, along with Southern California's Josh Day of Hilo.
