Punahou dancers slate 'Momotaro'

The Punahou Dance School will present its triennial recital, "Momotaro and the Peach Girl," beginning at 4:30 p.m. May 2 at Dillingham Theatre on the school campus.

Additional performances are scheduled at 4:30 p.m. May 3; 7 p.m. May 4; 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. May 5; and 2:30 p.m. May 6.

The performance features 280 students performing ballet, tap, jazz, musical theater, street dance and hula numbers, intertwined in a story loosely based on the Japanese folk tale of Momotaro, the peach boy. Momotaro will be danced by Andrew Sakaguchi, a theater veteran with credits at Diamond Head Theatre, Manoa Valley Theatre and Broadway. Performers range in age from 6 to 18, and come from 19 private and public schools in Honolulu. Charlys Ing is director. State ballet sets Mamiya concert

The School of Hawai'i State Ballet will stage its annual student concert at 3 p.m. May 5 and 6 at Mamiya Theatre at St. Louis High School. John Landovsky and Georgina Surles are directing. Students in the junior program will be showcased, from tiny 4-year-olds to more advanced, semi-professionals. A program highlight will be "Tchaikovsky Serenade." 'Ale'a to perform at Kamehameha

'Ale'a, a Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee, will make a guest appearance in the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiiana Ensemble's concert at 6 p.m. May 6 at Ke'elikolani Auditorium on the Kapalama campus. Also appearing will be Kaipo Hale and Hoku Zuttermeister. The Hawaiiana Ensemble has 30 students, ages 14 through 17, who learn and perform dance, chants and music, serving as ambassadors of aloha for the school.
