Simon Cardew, public affairs executive, dead at 63

Advertiser Staff

Simon Basil Duke Cardew, a former public relations executive for Sheraton Hotels in Hawai'i and later vice president for public affairs for Sheraton in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, died Tuesday in London. He was 63.

Cardew had been ill for 12 years with supranuclear palsy, a rare neurological disorder. He died in a hospice near his home in the Belgravia section of London.

Cardew, who spent 10 years in Hawai'i and came back to visit often, was well-known in the Islands as an avid sportsman and yachtsman. He worked briefly for The Honolulu Advertiser, and before joining Sheraton, he was a reporter for Project 9, a documentary film division of KGMB-TV. He worked 16 years with Sheraton before forming his own consulting firm in the hotel industry in 1987.

Cremation will be followed by a memorial service at a later date at St. Michael's Church in Belgravia.

Cardew is survived by his wife, Joan.

The family asks that donations be made to the Supranuclear Palsy Association and/or Hospice of St. John and St. Elizabeth in London in lieu of flowers. Inquiries may be made to a London telephone number, 01-494-863101.
