Celebrate Boy's and Children's day with arts and crafts, kites and koi

Kite-making workshops, a stone-rubbing activity station and yo-yo demonstrations are just some of the free offerings around town next weekend to celebrate Boys' Day and Children's Day in Hawai'i.

  • 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Market City Shopping Center in Kaimuki: The center will present Boys' Day activities, including a kite-making workshop and yo-yo demonstrations. Call 734-0282 for more information.
  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and May 6 at Ala Moana Center: Temari, the Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, will present a Keiki Art Festival in celebration of Children's Day. Experience gyotaku, the Japanese art of making animal prints; make a "rubbing" using stone images; fold a paper helmet or fish kite; and use bamboo stamps for printmaking.   • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii in Mo'ili'ili: More Boys' Day activities include sword displays, doll displays, live koi, yo-yo demonstrations, taiko drum and martial arts demonstrations, and more. Call 945-7633 for more information.
